The 1906 photograph by Joseph Mora on the Hopi reservation was the inspiration for the amusing Koshare Tug-A-War. After the ceremonial dancers have retired for food and a rest, the crowd is entertained and taunted by the Koshare clowns. They often use village politics, gossip or other incidents of importance to the tribe as the source for their comic actions. This limited edition bronze by Doug Hyde is offered exclusively through Glenn Green Galleries (505) 820-0008 Doug Hyde In 1967 he attended the San Francisco Art Institute on a scholarship but then enlisted in the US Army, doing tours of duty in the 198th Light Infantry Brigade in Vietnam. Seriously wounded by a grenade, he was hospitalized for several months and later learned to cut and shape stone at a friend's memorial business. In 1972 he returned to teach art at the Institute of American Indian Art. He has completed a number of major commissions. |
